Single Dental Implants

Have you a missing or broken tooth?

An implant is a great choice for a single missing tooth, whether it’s visible or not, and the results can be life-changing. A single dental implant provides the foundation for a crown, which will be created at The Dental Centre Ferndown in Dorset to match your teeth exactly.

If you’re missing more than one tooth, there are a number of options available to you. In some cases a single implant can support two replacement teeth, or two implants can support a fixed bridge if you have several missing teeth. A bridge is a long-lasting, which will help preserve the health of the rest of your teeth and jaw.

FAQ

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

While we’ll need to perform a full evaluation to confirm your suitability, most people in good general health are candidates for dental implants. During your consultation, we’ll assess the condition of your mouth, with a particular focus on the volume and quality of your jawbone. X-rays are commonly taken to help us determine whether there’s sufficient bone for implant placement.

What’s involved in placing a dental implant?

Implant placement is typically done under local anaesthetic and is a careful, minimally invasive procedure. Some swelling and mild discomfort afterwards are normal and should subside within a few days. We’ll provide complete post-operative care instructions, and you’ll have access to a contact number should you need support or guidance during recovery.

How long does the implant procedure take?

The time required varies based on individual circumstances. For a straightforward case, placing a single implant generally takes about an hour. Additional steps, such as bone grafting or gum treatment, may extend this timeframe.

How is the number of implants determined?

The number of implants needed depends on your specific restoration plan and how many teeth need to be replaced. If bone volume is limited and shorter implants must be used, more implants may be required to provide proper support. The final treatment plan takes into account both bone availability and the type of prosthetic restoration being planned.

How should dental implants be maintained?

Just like natural teeth, implants require diligent care to ensure long-term success. Daily brushing, flossing, and routine hygiene visits are essential. Paying extra attention to the area around the implant is important, and we recommend annual reviews to monitor the health of the surrounding bone and gums.

What is the lifespan of a dental implant?

When properly cared for, dental implants can last many years—often decades. However, as with natural teeth, there are no lifetime guarantees. In rare cases, an implant may not integrate fully with the bone. This occurs in about 1–2% of cases in the upper jaw. If this happens, we’ll typically detect the issue during the healing period and can replace the implant after a short recovery. Once integrated, implants have a success rate exceeding 90% even after 25 years, making them a highly reliable long-term solution.
